Cowboys’ Overshown Practices, Nearing Return: "Zero" Ready to Make a Statement
FRISCO, Texas – It’s been a long road back for Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, but the end is finally in sight. After a brutal knee injury that sidelined him for almost a year, the dynamic defender is back on the practice field, and he’s got his sights set on a primetime return that’s sure to turn heads.
Overshown, who suffered tears to his anterior cruciate, medial collateral, and posterior cruciate ligaments in his right knee, hit the practice field on Wednesday for the first time in a staggering 317 days. That’s a long time to be away from the game you love, but "D-Mo," as he’s affectionately known, is using that time as fuel. He’s locked in on making his return on November 17th against the Las Vegas Raiders on ESPN’s "Monday Night Football."
And he’s not just planning on making a quiet comeback.
"Monday night primetime, zero will be making his debut," Overshown declared with a confident grin. He’s set to become the first Cowboys player to ever rock the number 0 in a game, adding an extra layer of anticipation to his return. "I’m excited for it. It’s not going to be anything short of extraordinary. I’m ready to show truly how blessed I am."
That confidence isn’t just bravado; it’s a testament to the hard work and determination Overshown has poured into his recovery. He knows the severity of the injury he faced, and he’s determined to prove that he can come back even stronger.
"A lot of people claim that this knee injury is one of the worst of the worst and not too many people come back the same afterward," Overshown acknowledged. "I’m ready to put that to the test."
Remembering the Spark: Overshown’s Impact Before the Injury
Before the injury, Overshown was quickly establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with on the Cowboys’ defense. In just 13 games in 2024, he racked up an impressive 95 tackles, showcasing his knack for being around the ball. He also added 5 sacks, demonstrating his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. His stat line also included 3 tackles for loss, 16 quarterback pressures, 4 pass breakups, and even a forced fumble. To top it all off, he snagged a 23-yard interception return for a touchdown.
That fateful game against the Cincinnati Bengals on December 9th brought his promising season to a screeching halt. But even in that moment, Overshown’s focus was unwavering.
"I kinda knew at that moment what was going on with my knee, so I didn’t look back," Overshown recalled. "I said, ‘OK, this is what I’m dealing with. I don’t know the total damage done, but I know it’s something that I’m going to have to work back from.’"
That positive mindset became the cornerstone of his recovery.
"I gotta have faith. That’s all it was, the main part. Like it was you have faith and belief that what’s done for you is going to be for you."
Back to Work: Training Camp 2.0
Overshown’s return to practice this week marks a significant milestone in his journey. On Wednesday, he participated in individual drills, testing his knee and getting back into the rhythm of football. He anticipates ramping things up even further on Thursday, joining in 11-on-11 drills.
The Cowboys have a 21-day window to evaluate Overshown and decide whether to add him to the 53-man roster or keep him on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list for the remainder of the season. The expectation is that the team will utilize the full time to assess his progress and ensure he’s fully ready to contribute.
"It’s basically training camp for me," Overshown explained. He’s treating this period as an opportunity to knock off the rust, rebuild his stamina, and fine-tune his skills.
Beating the Odds: A Thanksgiving Goal, Achieved Early?
In the immediate aftermath of the injury, there were concerns that Overshown might even miss the entire 2025 season. But D-Mo had other plans. He set a personal goal of being back on the field by Thanksgiving, a target that seemed ambitious at the time.
Now, it looks like he might beat that goal by a solid 10 days.
Recent tests have revealed that the ligaments in his knee are fully healed and the knee is structurally sound. This positive news has fueled Overshown’s motivation and solidified his belief that he’s ready to make an impact.
The Cowboys have five more practices scheduled over the next two weeks before heading into their bye week on November 9th. Overshown will continue to work closely with the medical staff during the break, focusing on strengthening his knee and building his confidence. If all goes according to plan, he’ll be officially added to the active roster.
A Defense in Need: Overshown’s Potential Impact
The Cowboys’ defense has struggled this season, ranking near the bottom of the league in both yards allowed per game (32nd) and points allowed per game (30th). The team needs a spark, and Overshown’s return could provide just that.
His athleticism, versatility, and aggressive style of play could be a major boost to the Cowboys’ linebacker corps. He has the potential to be a disruptive force against both the run and the pass, and his energy and passion could be contagious for the entire defense.
However, Overshown is realistic about the expectations surrounding his return. He’s not trying to be a savior; he just wants to contribute in any way he can.
"Look, I ain’t going to go out there to try to do too much. I’m just going to do what I know I can do," Overshown said with a calm assurance. "When I get in between those lines, the sky’s the limit for me. I’m not saying that to be cocky or anything, but I know what I bring to the field."
He’s aware of the external pressure and the hopes that fans and coaches have for him. But he’s not letting that weigh him down.
"Hearing the things and seeing like, ‘Oh, we need D-Mo to be this when he comes back,’ or ‘We need D-Mo to do this,’ I ain’t worried about. I know what I bring to the table. I know what y’all saw last year and I know y’all going to get more of that, so it’s really no stress and no pressure on me to go back out and do anything."
Overshown believes that what he showed last year was just a glimpse of his full potential. He’s confident that he can continue to improve and become an even more impactful player.
