Buccaneers Lose WR Evans to Broken Collarbone
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans suffered a broken collarbone during Monday night’s 24-9 loss to the Detroit Lions, an injury that will sideline him for the majority of the remaining season, according to head coach Todd Bowles. This injury is a significant blow to the Buccaneers’ offense, as Evans is a key playmaker and one of the team’s most reliable targets.
"He’ll be out mostly toward the end of the year," Bowles stated, offering a somber outlook on Evans’ potential return timeline. "We’ll see what happens." The ambiguity of Bowles’ statement suggests the severity of the injury and the uncertainty surrounding Evans’ recovery.
The unfortunate incident occurred in the second quarter when Lions cornerback Rock Ya-Sin tackled Evans on a deep pass attempt from quarterback Baker Mayfield. As Evans lunged for the pass, his head collided with the turf upon impact with Ya-Sin. While Ya-Sin emerged unscathed, Evans remained motionless on the field, visibly grimacing in pain.
The Buccaneers’ medical staff immediately attended to Evans, while his teammates, including tight end Cade Otton, running back Rachaad White, left tackle Tristan Wirfs, and rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, gathered around him, offering support and concern. Veteran defensive captain Lavonte David and Coach Bowles also rushed to the field to check on Evans’ condition.
Otton expressed his concern for his teammate, stating, "I was just worried about him. I didn’t really know what was going on at the time, so just letting them know that I’m there for him and that’s all you can do in that moment. Obviously, he’s the leader on the team, great teammate, great person. So just want him to have a speedy recovery."
Egbuka, who was kneeling beside Evans on the field, revealed that Evans appeared to be unconscious when he arrived. "I was just praying that he was waking up, got down on a knee and prayed with him," Egbuka said. He added that he was encouraged to see Evans in good spirits after the game, highlighting Evans’ resilience and strong-willed nature.
Adding insult to injury, Evans also sustained a concussion during the play, further complicating his recovery process. He was subsequently carted off the field to the locker room, leaving a void in the Buccaneers’ offense and casting a pall over the team’s performance.
Monday’s game marked Evans’ return to the lineup after recovering from a hamstring strain sustained in Week 3. His absence was immediately felt, as the Buccaneers struggled to generate offense without their star receiver.
"It’s never good to see one of your stars go down like that – especially when coming back," Bowles lamented. "Everybody was excited to see him. It’s a tough blow. We’ve just got to regroup and come back."
The injury casts a shadow over Evans’ remarkable streak of 1,000-yard receiving seasons. He currently holds the NFL record for consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to begin a career, with 11. Had he achieved the milestone again in 2024, he would have surpassed Jerry Rice’s all-time record for consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.
Last season, Evans tied Rice’s record, reaching the milestone on the final play of the Buccaneers’ regular-season finale against the New Orleans Saints. Rice had previously expressed his support for Evans breaking the record, acknowledging his talent and dedication.
Mayfield acknowledged the unfortunate situation, stating, "It’s very unfortunate, but Mike’s a professional. He’ll handle it the best way he possibly can. Being injured, not being able to play is one thing, but I know Mike will be there and support the guys no matter what, and that’s really just a testament to who he is. That’s not easy to do. Sometimes it’s hard to stand around and watch when you know you want to be out there contributing, but Mike will help our guys out any way he can."
The Buccaneers will now have to rely on their other receivers to step up and fill the void left by Evans’ absence. Players like Chris Godwin, Russell Gage, and rookie Trey Palmer will need to elevate their performance and provide Mayfield with reliable targets. The team may also consider exploring free agency or trade options to add depth to their receiving corps.
The loss of Evans is a significant setback for the Buccaneers’ playoff aspirations. His ability to stretch the field, make contested catches, and provide a reliable target for Mayfield will be sorely missed. The team will need to find a way to overcome this adversity and continue to compete for a playoff berth.
The Buccaneers’ coaching staff will need to devise new strategies and game plans to compensate for Evans’ absence. They may need to rely more on their running game, utilize their tight ends more frequently, and find creative ways to get their other receivers involved.
The injury to Evans serves as a reminder of the physical toll that professional football takes on its players. The game is inherently violent, and injuries are an unfortunate reality. The Buccaneers will undoubtedly rally around Evans and provide him with the support he needs to make a full recovery.
