Cops: Ex-RB Martin Died in Custody After Break-in

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers All-Pro running back Doug Martin tragically passed away in police custody early Saturday morning following an incident at a residence in Oakland, California, authorities confirmed on Monday. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation.

According to the Oakland Police Department, officers responded to a call reporting a break-in just after 4:15 a.m. on Saturday. Upon arrival, they encountered Martin at the scene.

"Prior to his death, Martin was involved in a break-in at a residence in Oakland," stated the Oakland Police Department. "While responding officers were attempting to detain him, a brief struggle occurred. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive."

Emergency medical services were immediately called to the scene. Paramedics provided medical aid and transported Martin to a local hospital. Sadly, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Martin was only 36 years old.

Athletes First, the agency that represented Martin during his NFL career, issued a statement Monday evening acknowledging the former running back’s struggles with mental health. They stated that these challenges had "profoundly impacted his personal and professional life."

In their statement, Athletes First also noted that Martin’s family was seeking clarification regarding the circumstances of his death. They revealed that Martin’s parents had been actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for support.

"Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody by police," Athletes First explained. "An investigation into what transpired as he was detained is underway."

The Oakland Police Department has stated that, in accordance with standard department policy, a thorough investigation into the in-custody death is being conducted. This investigation involves the Homicide Section, the OPD Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. The aim is to ensure complete transparency and accountability in determining the events that led to Martin’s death.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where Martin spent six of his seven NFL seasons, expressed their condolences, calling him a "fan favorite" who made "a lasting impact on our franchise." His contributions to the team were so significant that he was selected as one of the top 50 players in franchise history as part of their 50-year anniversary celebration.

Standing at 5-foot-9, Martin was known for his powerful and relentless running style, earning him the memorable nickname "Muscle Hamster." Over the course of his NFL career, he amassed 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns, solidifying his place as a dynamic and impactful player.

Before his NFL career, Martin was a standout player at Boise State University. He was drafted by the Buccaneers in the first round (No. 31 overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact, rushing for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns in his rookie season. He also caught 49 passes for 472 yards and another touchdown. His impressive performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection. At the time, he had the third-most yards from scrimmage as a rookie in NFL history, trailing only Eric Dickerson (2,212 in 1984) and Edgerrin James (2,139 in 1999).

Martin’s most successful season came in 2015, when he earned All-Pro honors. He rushed for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns, and added 33 receptions for 271 yards and another score.

After two more seasons with the Buccaneers, Martin concluded his NFL career in 2018 with the Las Vegas Raiders.

A California native, Martin attended Boise State University from 2007 to 2011. He remains among the top 10 in career rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in the school’s history. He was recognized as a first-team all-conference honoree twice during his collegiate career.

The death of Doug Martin has sent shockwaves through the NFL community and beyond. His former teammates, coaches, and fans are mourning the loss of a talented player and a beloved figure. The investigation into his death continues, with the hope of providing clarity and closure to his family and friends. The focus remains on understanding the circumstances that led to his untimely passing and ensuring that all appropriate protocols were followed.

The legacy of Doug Martin extends beyond his on-field accomplishments. He will be remembered for his dedication, his passion for the game, and his impact on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise. His struggles with mental health serve as a reminder of the importance of addressing these challenges and providing support to those in need.

The NFL community is united in offering condolences to the Martin family during this difficult time. The memory of the "Muscle Hamster" will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him and admired his talent.
