Neil Reynolds' 2025 Week 5 Power Rankings: The NFL's Cream Rising To The Top?

Neil Reynolds’ 2025 Week 5 Power Rankings: The NFL’s Cream Rising to the Top?

Alright, folks, we’re rolling into Week 5 of the NFL season, and it’s time to take a good, hard look at who’s who in the league. After watching the first month of action, it’s becoming pretty clear that there are a few truly elite teams, a bunch of decent squads, and then… well, the rest of the league. Parity is the name of the game in today’s NFL, but some teams are just built different.

Let’s dive right into my Week 5 Power Rankings:

The Top Tier

  1. Buffalo Bills (4-0): Man, these guys are looking scary good. Remember that Week 1 nail-biter against Baltimore? That seems like a distant memory now. They’ve been steamrolling opponents ever since, with wins over the Jets, Dolphins, and Saints. Josh Allen is playing out of his mind, the defense is swarming, and it feels like the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC might just run through Buffalo. They’ve got some tough matchups coming up against Kansas City and Tampa Bay, but I wouldn’t bet against them.

  2. Detroit Lions (3-1): Talk about a turnaround! Everyone was ready to write off the Lions after that Week 1 stinker against Green Bay. But they’ve responded with three straight wins, scoring a ridiculous 124 points in the process. Jared Goff is slinging it, the running game is pounding, and the defense is making plays. They’re sitting atop the NFC North right now, and they look like a legitimate contender. Don’t sleep on these Lions!

  3. Philadelphia Eagles (4-0): The Eagles are finding ways to win even when they don’t play their best. Jalen Hurts can be inconsistent, Saquon Barkley is still searching for his groove, and the receivers have their ups and downs. But the bottom line is, they’re 4-0. They’ve got that winning mentality, and they know how to close out games. They need to find more consistency on offense if they want to make a deep playoff run, but for now, they’re getting the job done.

The "Respectable" Tier

  1. Los Angeles Rams (3-1): I’m giving the Rams a nod here because as long as Matthew Stafford is under center, they’ve got a shot against anyone in the NFC. That passing game is electric, and they’ve got some serious talent on the defensive side of the ball too. They can hang with the big boys. They’re not quite in that elite tier yet, but they’re definitely a team to watch.

  2. Los Angeles Chargers (3-1): The Chargers took their first loss of the season last week, but the bigger blow might be the injury to offensive tackle Joe Alt. That’s going to put even more pressure on Justin Herbert, who’s already one of the most pressured quarterbacks in the league. They need to find a way to protect him better if they want to make a serious run.

  3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1): The Bucs suffered their first loss of the year, but they showed some fight against the Super Bowl champs. Baker Mayfield threw a costly interception in the fourth quarter, but he’s always going to try to make a play. They’re a tough, resilient team, and they’re going to be a factor in the NFC South.

  4. Green Bay Packers (2-1-1): I’m starting to have some doubts about the Packers. They couldn’t take advantage of a struggling Dallas team on Sunday night, and they almost lost the game due to some late-game clock management issues. They need to clean up their act if they want to compete with the top teams in the NFC.
