The Jets: Is It Time to Pull the Plug on the Justin Fields Experiment?
Things have officially gone from bad to "hold my beer, it’s about to get worse" for the 0-7 Jets. It sounds like they’re ready to bench Justin Fields. So, what’s the deal?
Fowler: I’m hearing changes are definitely on the horizon, but don’t expect Aaron Glenn to be fired just yet. The Jets went all-in on hiring Glenn, and even though things haven’t exactly gone according to plan, they’ve actually managed to stay competitive in some games despite their QB struggles. Seriously, five of their seven losses have been by a combined 19 points. Plus, the defense is showing signs of life after a slow start. I don’t think you can pin all the offensive woes on Glenn.
Jets owner Woody Johnson sounds like he’s done with the Fields experiment.
Graziano: Glenn is seriously thinking about benching Fields for Tyrod Taylor, and he straight-up said that at his Monday press conference. He hasn’t made a final decision yet and wants to talk to other coaches who’ve been in similar situations. But here’s the rub: Taylor is 36 years old and not the future of the franchise. Fields, in theory, could be the guy if he can iron out his issues. If the Jets bench him for Taylor now, they’re basically admitting that the $30 million they guaranteed Fields in the offseason was a colossal mistake, and they’ll be back to square one in the QB search next spring.
Honestly, I’m not sure what Glenn will do or what the right answer is for the Jets. If they keep starting Fields and he continues to look lost, they risk losing the rest of the team. If they bench Fields, they’re admitting defeat on their biggest offseason move before Halloween. Personally, I don’t see the point of going with Taylor. They’re 0-7 and going nowhere. I’d stick with Fields and try to salvage something out of the season so they can get a full year’s worth of data to evaluate him. But hey, it’s easy for me to say that from the sidelines.
Fowler: I’ve been talking to some NFL coaches who think the Jets should have leaned into Fields’ running ability earlier. He’s only rushed 42 times in six starts, averaging just three designed runs per game over the past three. Back in Week 1, Fields had nine designed runs, and the Jets put up 32 points! From 2022 to 2024, Fields was averaging around 10 rushes per game as a full-time starter.
"That’s what he’s most comfortable with," says one NFL assistant coach who’s worked with Fields. "Then you can throw him off play-action with more success. I don’t care if you use a high-school-style offense, but he needs to run."
But at this point, it’s probably a moot point. If Glenn wants to make a change, he needs to do it now. And with Johnson publicly criticizing Fields, it’s going to be tough to go back to him. Don’t expect fireworks with Taylor, but he can at least run a basic passing game.
Graziano: I agree that they need to use Fields as a runner more. It was tough to do against the Broncos, who are good at containing rushing QBs, but they should have been able to do it against the Panthers.
Fowler: With the trade deadline coming up, expect the Jets to consider trading some veterans to get draft capital and build for the future. Jermaine Johnson, Michael Carter II, and Breece Hall are among the players generating interest.
Graziano: I also think the Jets will be active sellers, so the team around Fields or Taylor from November 5th on could be looking a little different. This whole situation is pretty bleak, and I hope the Jets’ front office and coaching staff are working on ways to make the second half of the season bearable so they can actually evaluate the roster. If they don’t come out of Glenn’s first year with a clear idea of who’s part of their future, it’ll be a wasted season.
Chiefs: Can They Add More Firepower at the Deadline?
The Chiefs are starting to look like their old selves again, but could they get aggressive and add even more help before the trade deadline?
